Warm Up With Control

Performance driving places greater demands on the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, and drivetrain. Rather than immediately applying heavy acceleration after starting the vehicle, begin with gentle inputs and allow the car to build operating temperature through normal driving.
A brief start-up followed by moderate driving is generally more appropriate than prolonged stationary idling. As temperatures stabilize, acceleration and other inputs can gradually become more demanding.
After sustained spirited driving, returning to a calmer pace before stopping can also provide a smoother transition from higher loads to normal operation. Always follow the vehicle's specific operating guidance where it provides additional recommendations.

Recognize Brake Changes Early

Repeated heavy braking generates substantial heat, which can affect braking feel and performance. Changes such as a soft pedal, excessive pedal travel, unusual odor, vibration, or reduced braking response should be treated as signs that the system requires attention.
When conditions permit, reduce braking demands and stop safely if necessary. If an unusual sensation continues after the brakes have returned to normal operating temperatures, arrange a professional inspection.

Check Tire Pressure Cold

Tire pressure changes naturally with temperature. For the most useful reading, check the tires when they are cold and compare the measurement with the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure.
A tire that has been driven for an extended period will normally show a higher pressure because of heat. Do not release air from a warm tire simply to reach the recommended cold-pressure figure. Instead, allow the tires to cool and make any adjustment using a cold reading.

Adapt to the Road

A capable vehicle cannot overcome changing road conditions. Rain, standing water, cold temperatures, uneven surfaces, and reduced traction can all affect steering, acceleration, and braking.
When grip is uncertain, use progressive steering, braking, and throttle inputs. Increase following distance and allow additional room for braking rather than relying on the vehicle to provide the same level of traction available on a dry surface.

Allow Time for New Tires

Check Alignment After Impacts

Potholes, curbs, and rough surfaces can affect wheel alignment or suspension components. Changes are not always immediately obvious, so paying attention to the vehicle's behavior is worthwhile.
A steering wheel that no longer sits centered while traveling straight, a persistent pull to one side, or uneven tire wear can indicate that the wheels or suspension should be inspected.
Maintaining correct wheel geometry helps preserve predictable steering response and even tire wear.

Keep Visibility Clear

Clear visibility is an essential part of precise driving. Keep the windshield and exterior glass clean, maintain sufficient washer fluid, and replace worn wiper blades when they no longer clear the surface effectively.
The inside of the windshield can also develop a thin film that becomes particularly noticeable under glare or at night. Cleaning both sides regularly can improve clarity and make it easier to judge distances, monitor surrounding traffic, and position the vehicle accurately.

Performance driving is not about using the vehicle's maximum capability on every journey. The greater skill lies in recognizing how the car is responding and making appropriate adjustments before conditions become demanding.
